தோய்க்கும் துணியில் எல்லாம், நந்தலாலா

கொடியில் காயும் துணிகள்

அவ்வப்போது துணிகளை வாஷிங் மெஷினில் போட்டு துவைத்து, மாடியில் கொடியில் தொங்கவிட்டு, மாலையில் எடுத்து மடிக்கும் போது, ஏதோ அந்த வாரம் செய்த பெரிய சாதனையாக தோன்றுகிறது.

பள்ளி கல்லூரி காலங்களில் துணி துவைக்க எந்த இயந்திரமும் இல்லை, அப்பொழுதெல்லாம் வேலைக்காரி தான் துணி துவைப்பார்கள். ஒரு சில மாதங்கள் வேலைக்கு ஆளில்லாத போது, நாள் முழுதும் சேர்ந்த பாத்திரங்களை இரவில் தேய்ப்பேன். ஒரு மணி நேரம் ஆகும். சலிக்கும், அலுக்கும், ஆனால் செய்து முடித்த பின் எதோ ஒரு திருப்தி. குடும்பத்திற்கு ஏதோ நம்மால் செய்த உதவி என்று ஒர் சின்ன திருப்தி. இப்படி வேலைக்காரி இல்லாத நாட்களில் என் தங்கை துணி துவைப்பாள், பத்து நிமிடத்தில். அதே துணி நான் அரை மணி நேரம் ஆகும். யார் பாத்திரம் தேய்த்தாலும் என்னை விட மிக வேகமாக பாதி நேரத்திலோ அதற்கும் குறைவான நேரத்திலோ செய்வார்கள். நான் கல்லூரி ஹாஸ்டல் சென்று விட்டால் வீட்டில் எல்லா வேலையும் தங்கை தான்.

ஹாஸ்டலில் மாணவர்கள் யாவரும் எங்கள் துணிகளை நாங்களே துவைப்போம். எனக்கு அதில் நான்கு ஐந்து ஆண்டு பயிற்சி, பாதி மாணவர்களுக்கு அது முதல் சோதனை.

கல்லூரியில் நான்காம் ஆண்டு படிக்கும் போது, அமெரிக்காவில் மேல் படிப்பு படிக்க பல்கலைகழகங்களுக்கு ஜிஆர்இ தேர்வு எழுதி, அப்ளிகேஷன் ஃபார்ம் அனுப்பும் போது, அப்பாடா அமெரிக்காவிற்கு போனால் அங்கே துணி துவைக்க இயந்திரம் உண்டு என்று ஆவலுடன் எதிர்பார்ப்பேன். இந்திய நடுத்தர மக்களால் என் வாழ்நாளில் இது போன்று வாஷிங் மெஷின், அல்லது பாத்திரம் துவைக்கும் டிஷ்வாஷர் வாங்க இயலும் என்று நினைக்கவில்லை.

எங்கள் வீட்டில் அக்காலத்தில் ஃப்ரிட்ஜ் கூட இல்லை. படிப்பு கெடும் என்று அப்பா டிவி வாங்கவில்லை. மின் விளக்கு மின் விசிறி மிக்ஸி தவிற மின் கருவிகளே கிடையாது. 1990களில் இந்தியாவில் அனைத்து நடுத்தர குடும்பங்களிலும் துணி துவைக்கும் இயந்திரம் வந்து விட்டது. இன்றும் வெகு சில குடும்பங்களில் மட்டுமே பாத்திரம் தேய்க்கும் டிஷ்வாஷர்கள் உள்ளன. அமெரிக்காவில் 1920களிலேயே துணி துவைக்கும் இயந்திரங்கள் அறிமுகமாயின. இந்தியாவிற்கு பரவலாக 80 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகிவிட்டன.

கோவிட் காலத்தில் ஒரு சில மாதங்கள் மீண்டும் பாத்திரம் தேய்க்கும் சூழ்நிலை வந்த போது, அதே ஒரு மணி நேர பணி (இரவில் அல்ல, மதிய சாப்பாட்டுக்கு முன்). ஆனால் 1980கள் போல் பம்புக்குழாயில் தண்ணி இரைத்து, குடங்களிலும் தவலைகளிலும் பிடித்து சிக்கனமாக தண்ணீர் செலவழித்து பாத்திரம் தேய்க்கும் துணி துவைக்கும் கட்டாயம் இல்லை. மாடியில் தண்ணித் தொட்டி, தண்ணீர் ஏற்ற மின்சார மோட்டார், குழாய், வசதியான் சிங்க் எல்லாம் இருபது வருடமாக உள்ளன.

அகாத்தா கிறிஸ்டி எனும் மிக வெற்றிகரமான எழுத்தாளரின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு படிக்கும் போது (மிக மிக போரடிக்கும் புத்தகம்) அவர் பெரும் கோடீஸ்வரர் ஆன பின்பும், அவ்வப்போது பாத்திரம் தேய்ப்பார், என்று எழுதி இருந்தார். கதை எழுதுவதில் எண்ணத் தடைகள், உர்சாக குறைப்பு, கதைச்சிக்கல், மனச்சோர்வு எது வந்தாலும், ஒரு நாள் வீட்டுப்பணி செய்தால் அதெல்லாம் பறந்து போய் புது புது யோஜனைகள் தோன்றுமாம், கருத்து சிக்கல்கள் காணாமல் போய்விடுமாம்.

எனக்கு அதெல்லாம் ஒன்றும் ஆவதில்லை. எதோ கொஞ்சம் உடற்பயிற்சி செய்த மாதிரி என்னை நானே ஏமாற்றிக் கொள்ளும் ஒரு சின்ன சந்தோஷம் மட்டுமே மிஞ்சும்.

A witness to history at Esalam

On a recent tour, at Esalam, we met this genteleman.

In 1987 Rajendra Chola copper plates were discovered in this Ramanatheshvara temple in Esalam near Villupuram. Dr Nagaswamy head of TN archaeology department wanted to bring back these copper plates to Madras, to take estampages, read and decipher and publish the inscriptions on the copper plates. But the local villagers adamantly refused to let him take them away from the village

But they also realized the inscriptions were in Sanskrit and Tamil, and Tamil portion was in chola script, most of which was unreadable except by epigraphists

Dr Nagaswamy offered to read them out. A public meeting was arranged where he read out the inscriptions and translated the sanskrit portions and explained the tamil portions.

After this they realized he was a genuine scholar, and it is their village which would become famous if this information and the contents of the inscriptions was made public. So they allowed the archaeological team to take back the copper plates.

They also installed a commemorative plaque, in the temple gopuram, about the discovery of the copper plates.

The gentleman in the photo mentioned this and when I asked him if he was present at the discovery and during Nagaswamy's talk, he nodded and asked me if I was an associate of Mr Sridharan (who had accompanied Nagaswamy then). Uma Nagaswamy sent me this photo below of the 1987 public meeting, when I informed her of this experience.

History lives on in such small episodes.

 I read this today in Twitter - it seems ridiculous, but a famous member of the Cabinet of the US Government under Donald Trump, equivalent to a Cabinet Minister in any government - has had his vote taken away. None other than Robert F Kennedy Jr, nephew of former President John Kennedy

This surpasses even Trump being kicked of social media like Twitter and Facebook when he was President of the United States, in November 2020, a couple of days after Biden was elected President
