Purnagiri - the Tantrapitha

The following is  a summary of a paper title "Purnagiri : The Tantrapitha" written by Dr Nagaswamy and published in his book Facets of South Indian Art and Architecture. This was one of the papers which I summarized in my lecture, for the ongoing Tamil Heritage Trust Pecchu Kacheri.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hevajra Tantra, a 7th century Buddhist book, refers to four important pithas:

            Jaalandhara, Oddiyaana, Purnagiri and Kaamarupa

While the other three have been identified, Purnagiri was disputed. Such texts as Sadhaanamaala, Rudrayaamala, Abul Fasl’s Ain-i-Akbari and Hindu texts that refer to Saaktha pithas refer to these.

DC Sirkar identified Purnagiri near Bijapur.

Agehananda says four pillars are allocated to four directions, but it is purely theoretical. Oddiyaana is far west, Jaalandhara in north west, and others in far east, none in the south.

Nagaswamy identifies a Kannagi temple on the Kerala – Tamilnadu border, whose oldest inscription is of RajaRaja Chola. It also has inscriptions of Maravarman Sundara Pandya and Kulasekhara Pandya, which identify the mountain as Purnagiri and the presiding deity as Purnagiri Aludaiya Naaciyaar. There are no records after 14th century.

Lokesh Chandra said that Oddiyaana is Kanchipuram Kamakshi temple, citing extensively from Tibetan Buddhist sources. The word kacchi in Tamil means Oddiyana as a waist-belt. But no Tamil epic like Silappadikaaram or Manimegalai use the word Oddiyana.

Second, as per Lokesh Chandra, the city of Kanchi was called WuCha mean Uda (Oddiyana), in a letter by the king of WuCha addressed to Chinese emperor, by the 8th century Buddhist teacher Prajnaa. But Kanchi was called Kin-chi by Hwi-Li a contemporary of Prajnaa

A poem in the Rudrayaamala, compares the various impartant sites to parts of the human body. A section of this poem is given below:

Muulaadhaara Kamarupam hrdi Jaalandharam tathaa
lalaatE Purnagiri-aakhyam ca Oddiyaanam tad-oordhvakE
Vaaranaasim bhruvOrmadhyE Jvalanteem lOcana dvayE
(Rudrayaamala, cited in Tantrasaastra)

Third, all texts locate Oddiyana in the east.

Citing such evidence, Nagaswamy concludes that the Purnagiri is the hill with the Kannagi temple, not Kanchipuram Kamakshi temple.

Siva in Chidambaram is worshipped with Vedic chants, considered prescribed by Patanjali, who is considered same as author of Mahabhaashya and Yoga Sutra. This is mentioned by Umpathy Sivam in the 14th century.

Nagaswamy differs. He thinks that  Makutaagama is followed. Also peculiarly, Devi is worshipped with Tantric chants, from Saakta texts. There are no Vedic chants used in the worship of Parvati. This too points to a strong Saakta influence, perhaps the reflection of Bengal influence, where the Saakta cult is very strong.

Hitler’s son

My father, Rangarathnam, orator - perhaps at a Vivekananda College function.

 This was in June 2010.

“What books are those?” asked my father, Rangarathnam.

“Short stories by Indira Parthasarathy,” I replied. “He autographed them.” I was returning from a function at Tag Center, where Tiruppur Krishnan and three others performed public readings of four of the author’s short stories, from two volumes published by Kizhakku Pathippagam.

“We would sit on the same porch and he would tease me, you know,” said my father. He was suffering from dementia, and which was only diagnosed the previous year. He had some difficulties with new memories, but had excellent recollection of his earlier days. His eyesight and hearing had deteriorated, he rarely went out anymore, but at least he was off the terrible, twice daily, insulin injections, taking tablets instead.

We had not had a good conversation in a while. But something about Indira Parthasarathy triggered memories and he talked of several childhood memories, of school days in Kumbakonam (but almost never college life); of work as a lawyer in the Madras High Court, but rarely of earlier days in Madras.

This was the first time he had talked of childhood days with Indira Parthasarthy.

In October, my father passed away.

I met Indira Parthasarathy at the Tamil Teritage Trust’s Lecture Kacheri in Raga Sudha hall in December 2011, where I introduced myself as Rangarathnam’s son. “How is Rangarathnam?” he asked eagerly. “I’m sorry, he passed away last year,” I said. He was stunned into silence. After a few minutes, he said, “It’s always a shock to hear that one of your colleagues has passed away.”

In July 2012, Mr Narasiah invited me along with four others, to speak at Bharathi Illam, about Krittika’s  (pen name of Mathuram Bhuthalingam) book “Finger on the Lute” - a biography of Subramania Bharathi. You can imagine my numbness – being asked to talk about Bharathi at the house where he stayed! What an honour.

With Artist Gopulu

When I went there, I saw artist Gopulu and Indira Parthasarathi, seated side by side, socialising with admirers. Gopulu whose sketches adorned Krittika’s book, asked my name and delightedly(!!) said that his name was Gopu too! Then he autographed my book.

I turned to Indira Parthasarathi, sure that he would not remember me, and introduced myself, as “Rangarathnam’s son.” Without a beat he responded, “You have an identity of your own.”

That took my breath away. It was a reprimand, fatherly advice and a philosophical opinion, epigrammatically crisp in its phrasing. In every person’s life, there must come such a moment, better early than late. I also realized how sharp and mentally agile Indira Parthasarathi still was, in contrast to my father who had suffered from memory loss.

One of the great heroes of the Indian Republic, and architect of the Green Revolution of the 1960s, Dr MS Swaminathan, was in attendance. He is the son in law of Krittika and her daughter, Smt Mina Swaminathan, who had requested Mr Narasiah to arrange the evening’s program. I really wanted to meet him, but I had been thoroughly tongue-tied with Gopulu, and I knew I would have nothing to say to him either. When I was at Texas A&M university, I resolved many times to visit Norman Borlaug, who was an Emeritus Professor in the campus, but could never muster up the courage or overcome the diffidence to do so. It doesn’t matter, I would tell myself, just go around to his office, say “Thank you” and come back. But I could never do it.

Other celebrities like Rajumar Bharathi, the poet’s descendant, GnanaRajasekharan, the director of a Tamil movie on Bharathi were also present, as was Professor Swaminathan of Tamil Heritage Trust. Mr Narayanaswami, who had come from Palavakkam, was kind enough to take photos.

After our speeches were over, Prof Swaminathan gave me a thumbs up and a smile on his way out, Indira Parthasarathi had a word of praise (Veluthu vaangitteenga “வெளுத்து வாங்கிட்டீங்க”).

Gopulu, Narasiah, Rajkumar Bharathi on the dais
Gopu speaking about "Finger on the Lute"

“Your father and I acted in a college play,” he reminisced. “It was written by KK Pillai, the historian. The Second World War had ended, and the Nuremberg trials conducted. Several Germans and Japanese warriors were tried and convicted for war crimes. Pillai considered this “Victor’s Justice” – no justice at all, just a sham trial.

“Anyway we staged that play. I acted as a Public Prosecutor in that play. Your father also acted in it.

“He played the role of Adolf Hitler.”

Nothing, I thought, could top an evening where I had spoken on Bharathi at his house, to an audience of the poet’s family, and living legends like MSS, Gopulu and Indira Parthasarathy himself. But you can imagine how I must felt about this statement! Talk about a lightning bolts from a blue sky.

My father never told me about this. In fact, he had never spoken of his college days in Kumbakonam, never of having acted in any play, certainly not of dressing up as Der Feuhrer himself.

Me and Indira Parthasarathi at Bharathi Illam, Thiruvallikeni, Madras

This year, Indira Parthasarathi spoke on Silappadhikaram at Tamil Heritage Trust. I gave a brief introduction to our group, then mentioned this incident to the audience. At the end of his speech, I again asked him if he remembered me.

“How could I forget Hitler’s son?” he quipped.

Mein Feuhrer!

Lady and Gentlemen

1970. Or maybe late 1969. Evening. Ranade Library in Luz, Mylapore. Malcolm Adiseshiah was about  to deliver a lecture on economics at the Srinivasa Sastri Hall.

Malcolm Adiseshiah and wife - photo at MIDS, Adayar, Madras
“Ladies and Gentlemen,” he began. Then he corrected himself.

“Lady and Gentlemen,” he said, smiling at the only lady in the room.

After a pause, while other necks craned to glimpse the only lady in the room, he improved upon his correction.

“Lady with a baby in her hand, and Gentlemen,” he grinned, and this time the audience broke into
laughter and approval.

My father, Rangarathnam, told me this story. At that time he was an upcoming lawyer in the Madras High Court - a Mylapore vakeel in Tamil parlance; a part time lecture on Mercantile and Commercial Law at the Vivekanda College; an amateur novelist – at least one of his stories had been published in either Kumudam or Ananda Vikatan, under the pseudonym Athreyan; with a suspended career in politics – he had contested the 1967 Madras elections under a Congress ticket for post of Corporation Councillor and had lost in the DMK wave.

The lady with the baby was Pushpa. She had written her MA (Economics) final papers in April 1969, while eight months pregnant.

She was my mother.

I was reminded of the incident when I attended a lecture at MIDS, in Adayar, yesterday. MIDS was founded by that very Adiseshiah.

There is famous incident in the life of Subrahmanya Bharathi, when he went to meet Sister Nivedita and she asked him why she hadn't brought his wife.

My dad always beamed with pride when he told me this story. I think about this when I see the rare couple attend a program together.

The photo below is of my parents, at a School Day function in CIT Colony English Primary School, Mylapore where my sister, my brother and I studied first. This photo is from 1978 - my father was Chief Guest and my mother gave away the prizes.

A Sloka, A Pun, A Number, A Date, A Book

हेविष्णो निहितं कृत्स्नं जगत् त्वय्येव कारणे । ज्योतिषां ज्योतिषे तस्मै नमो नारायणाय ते ॥ hE vishNo nihitaM kRtsnam jagat tvayyEva kaaraNE | jyOtishaaM jyotishE tasmai namO naaraayaNaaya tE || ஹே விஷ்ணோ நிஹிதம் க்ருத்ஸ்னம் ஜகத் த்வய்யேவ காரணே | ஜ்யோதிஷாம் ஜ்யோதிஷே தஸ்மை நமோ நாராயணாய தே || The opening verse of Nilakanta Somayaaji's work on astronomy "Tantra Sangraha" translated into English with excellent notes, by Professor K Ramasubramaniam of IIT Bombay and Professor MS Sriram of Madras University.
The verse is a salutation to Vishnu & Narayana -
"Oh Vishnu, creator of everything, you are the cause of the earth Jyothishas shine because of you, I salute you Narayana" is the meaning.

Narayana is not just a second reference to Vishnu but a reference to Netra Narayana, the king who was the benefactor of Nilakanta!!

Sloka letter
Active letter
Number 8 4 5 0 8 6 1 0

Also, there is a hidden numerical reference - the first 8 letters हेविष्णो निहितं कृत्स्नं translated into an AhargaNaa अहर्गणा number 1680548 according to the Katapayaadi system. That is the number days that have passed since the start of the Kali Yuga in the Hindu astronomical reckoning. Kali Yuga starts on the day Mahabharatha ended, on Feb 17, 3102 BC according to a system used by Indian astronomers. So 1680548 would translate to the day March 22, 1500 AD : this is Nilakanta Somasatvan's way of encoding the date of his composition in the first sloka of his work, say the translators!!

Bus Stop Index

I have a fascination for buses, as some people do for trains, ships, trams, cars, motorbikes, and yes rockets. I take being a connoisseur of the commonplace seriously. Buses are perhaps the least appreciated, definitely the least glamorous, of motorized vehicles. Even bicycles are far more fashionable. Bicycle snobs abound; no bus snob exists. Part of the static infrastructure of buses is bus stops, where people wait. I believe buses and bus stops reflect a community, a government and the economy.

Buses are one of the miracles of the 20th century, far more important for freedom and prosperity than most measures dealt with by economists. Economists use such measures as Consumer Price Index(CPI), Gross National Product (GNP), inflation, growth rates and the Gini coefficient - most people understand these poorly, and journalists, bureaucrats and social activists often have such a poor understanding of these, that their ignorance might be more useful. Mathematicians, fortunately, find these so practical, that they avoid them altogether.

I think a bus index and a bus stop index may be one useful index of the economy. The former is a index for the economy, with fares, people transported, times of operation, seating capacity, and being useful information. A bus stop index would merely reflect the aesthetic standards of a community, or the degree of apathy or engagement of local government. In Madras for the last few years, there are no bus stops in most places, so no shelter from rain and sun. This is purely a contractor issue and political one-up-manship.

Here are a few regular and a few unusual bus stops, that caught my eye, usually, when I was in a bus and had my hands free.

Kerala

Politics permeates every aspect of Kerala life, bus stops are no exception.

Thiripparaiyaar
Notice the post box on one of the pillars. And the complete absence of movie or business or siddha doctor pamphlets plastering the surfaces, unlike in Tamil Nadu.

Thiru Vallam - Congresss pillar
Thiruvallam - I took the photo from inside the bus stop. These are Congress colors not India colors, there are party flag posts outside. It has 3 seats, not in photo.

Trivandrum East Fort
I found this bus stop in Trivandrum city, near the Padmanabha Swamy temple. I like the aesthetic touch of the paavai vilakku (Lady with Lamp) statue aesthetically pleasing, though orange paint would not be my choice.

TamilNadu

Thiruneelakkudi - near Mayiladuthurai
You have to admit, that the bus stop at Thiruneelakkudi is more fancy than some houses or government buildings.

Suchindram
This one at Suchindram, the bus stop for the main temple, has a roof, slight modeled on a temple vimana, with kalasams on top!

Gujarat

My bus stop index idea is a recent one, and I took a few pictures of bus stops and buses while in Gujarat. This first yellow paint square shelter, outside Bhuj, is typical of rural areas, even in TamilNadu.

Bhuj

Naroda, Ahmedabad
This is a bus stop in Naroda, a suburb of Ahmedabad, with a long bus stop, and a few seats and a tea shop. Also quite typical. The next two, are the interior and exterior of BRTS bus stops in Ahmedabad - very atypical. Pune and Delhi are two other cities with BRTS. The one in Pune is a farce; I haven't been to Delhi.

BRTS bus stop - interior - Ahmedabad

BRTS  bus stop Ahemdabad
This one below, in Baroda, is actually more typical. A simple bus stop in Baroda, one of the cleanest cities I have seen. I did not see many buses in the early mornings, though. In Tamilnadu and Kerala buses are quite common, even in the early mornings. North Indian winters are cold, those states wake up late, so that's not a surprise.

Baroda

Mehsana
Finally, Mehsana, a small town with a simple bus stop. Sadly, still better than most of Madras.
