The Thames and the Cooum

In the 19th century, the river Thames that flows through London was a far worse stinking river than the river Cooum that flows through Madras. Not only the river, but the whole city of London was the world’s largest dumpyard. Carolyn Steel traces the growth of the London through its ravenous demand for food, first marched in as cattle and sheep on hooves, and later carted in as food by bullock carts and ships.

The Cooum in Chintadiripet
When an engineer, Chadwick, proposed that Thames be cleaned,The Times of London opposed it vehemently: "England wants to be clean, but not be cleaned by Chadwick" ran their editorial. So says Peter Medawar in his book The Limits of Science.

Poor Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria died surrounded by 42 cesspools, and the inconsolable queen then ordered the cleaning up of London - thus was born the modern sewerage system. This was the most useful royal death in history, first for England, then the world. Systematically, the largest metropolis of the post-Industrial Revolution era, got its first effective sewerage system.

Another factor might be mentioned here – horses. More specifically horse dung. As Stephen Leavitt explains brilliantly in his book SuperFreakonomics, the modern curse of Carbon-di-oxide pollution is insignificant compared to the pre-automobile horse-dung pollution that every European and American city suffered. The tall basements of stone houses in the US cities of that era – New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and of similar cities in Europe, owe their design to the deep aversion of the moneyed classes, who built such residences, to prevent rain mixed sludge, thoroughly enriched with horse and human refuse, from entering their homes. In a remarkable connection, the houses of Bohra Muslims in Siddhpur, a city in Gujarat, were built on the designs of the European houses of the time – and reflect the high basements of such houses.

Bohra houses in Siddhpur, Gujarat - with high basements

Environmentalists mindlessly curse the internal combustion engine, and the modern mechanical world, as the root of all pollution, and as evil incarnate. I have already written about how vital Diesel and Benz’s automobile was to improving farming, citing Matt Ridley. Curse softly, dear Anti-carbon Totalitarians.

Thomas Hager, in his book on the synthesis of nitrogen, The Alchemy of Air, vividly describes cargo ships carrying mountains of guano– bat and bird dung from Pacific islands off the Peruvian coast, arriving at the ports of England. This worsened the smell. London was steadily getting dirtier and smellier well before the Industrial Revolution, and dumping its untreated sewage and trash into the Thames worsened things - in fact, the Great Stink of 1858 caused Parliament to shift from London to Oxford. (If only Muhammad bin Thugluq had such a terrific excuse!)

The word malaria comes from the Latin word “mal” and “air”, since scientists at one time believed that the disease was caused by the bad air, as the effects of the anopheles mosquito was unknown then.

Most readers of English literature may be familiar with the satires of Charles Dickens of the soot and terrible pollution of London, or the more popular depictions of street boys in the Sherlock Holmes stories. Such a London no longer exists. It is a far cleaner, far less polluted metropolis, a beacon for financiers, fashionistas, artists and capitalists. That is a lesson for the dirty cities of the world.

Stephen Johnson in this tracing of the early history of curing cholera in London, describes the discovery of polluted water as the source of cholera. Bill Joy, in this otherwise melancholy, apocalyptic soliloquy, mentions that Clean water is more important than antibiotics as weapon of health. Some things are obvious, after someone points it out.

I cannot resist pointing out at this point the single most repeated thing about the Indus Valley Civilization – they had the most advanced sewerage systems of the world until the 19th century,  have a better system than most cities and villages in India.  On our January 2014 site visit of Tamil Heritage Trust to Lothal, we were given a tour of the drainage systems of that Harappan city. Sewage is disgusting as current affairs, but apparently fascinating as heritage!

As Sriram V elucidated to some of us on a Chintadripet Heritage Walk, it was during Lord Hobart’s Governorship of Madras Presidency, that the plan for a sewerage system for Madras germinated. In fact, Lord Hobart’s death was as useful to Madras, as Prince Albert’s was to England.

More on Ellis Inscription

This is continuation of my earlier blog on the Ellis inscription, which dealt with the second half of his inscription. In this blog, I translate his poetic tribute to the British Empire, its mighty navy, its glorious rule and his colonial thought process.

Here beginneth the inscription.

He, of Horse and Lion, under whose Umbrella (Protection)

Whose Navy shrinks the sea
Which roar with rumbling of his Ships
He with no Equal in Seafaring life
Only Lord of Massive Oceans
And of Many Islands that pay tribute

Sweeter than a Mother, Better than a father
To Everyone under his Protective Shadow

For the remaining portion see my earlier blog on this Ellis inscription.

Ellis’ skill at poetry, and his feel and understanding of the meikeerthi verse especially, is remarkable. It is a perfect combination of exaggeration and truth, loyalty and admiration, service and imperiousness. Referring to King George as Thrice Crowned (Mummudi thartiththa), equating England , Scotland and Hibernia (Ireland) with the 3 Tamil kingdoms and their Muventhars, is a masterstroke. Even the inscribed stone is his way of  integrating himself – as Collector, comparable to a feudatory King – and English rule, seamlessly into Tamil history.

The tone of  the inscription is proudly colonial, yet conscious:
  • of duty – to relieve drought; hence Sceptre (செங்கோல்) and Truth (மெய்மறை யொழுக்கம்)
  • of history and tradition, hence the reference to TirukkuraL and TiruVaLLuvar
  • of literary style, hence an inscription in aaciriyappaa (ஆசிரியப்பா)
  • of position and power, hence the list of subservient lands – Chera Chola Kannaada Andhra etc. under the Governor Elliot and the Company
  • of glory and majesty, hence the reference to unequaled English Navy and All Conquering English rule
  • of affection for people and respect for their cultural belief, hence auspicious day (சுபதினம்) and respect for cultural features like nakshatra, thithi etc. and Salivahana Saka calendar

What Indo-Saracenic architecture attempted to do, namely, impose upon India an architectural awareness of both the power and benevolence of British Rule, Ellis attempts here with a poem and inscription. I think he succeeds brilliantly, but events over took him, and he was forgotten until recently rediscovered by Thomas Trautmann.

I could not discover who U Velayath (யூவெலயத்) mentioned in the last few lines was. He is not in the list of Governors, or Governors-General or East India Company Chairmen Wikipedia lists. Mr KRA Narasiah to the rescue! He says, this was Hugh Elliot, Governor of Madras from 1814 to 1820, under whom Ellis worked as both Treasury Officer and Collector of Madras. Elliot’s name is included in HD Love’s book Vestiges of Old Madras.

An Englishman’s Tamil Inscription

For those who are accustomed to inscriptions by Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysala and Vijayanagar and Nayaks, here is an Tamil inscription by an Englishman, Francis Whyte Ellis, who at the time was employed by the East India Company as Mint Supervisor in Madras. This stone slab was inscribed on a well in Madras. Ellis was somewhat forgotten, until recently rediscovered by Thomas Trautmann. The text below is taken from Mr Narasiah’s book மதராசபட்டினம். A photo of this slab is also found in Prof. Trautmann’s book, எல்லிசும் திராவிடச்சான்றும்,  a translation of his book ‘Ellis and the Dravidian Proof’.

The slab lay somewhat neglected in the Tirumalai Nayak Mahal Museum, in Madurai, until Mr Narasiah pointed out its importance and that of Ellis, upon which they had it mounted in its current place. In March this year, Mr Narasiah showed me around the Mahal, and you see a photo of him, and two wonderful museum officials (whom Mr Narasiah mesmerized with his detailed knowledge of the Mahal) with the slab that has Ellis’ inscription.

Here's my simple translation of the later portion of the inscription. I’ll present the earlier portion of the inscription and my translation in a later blog.

In Jayamkonda Thondiya Naadu (north Tamil Nadu, with Kanchipuram as capital, was called Thondai Naadu from the Sangam era. When the Cholas conquered it around 900 AD, they renamed it Jayam Konda Mandalam.)

from western hills to eastern sea, like a jewel in the ocean, lies the city of Chennai pattanam

As the divine poet Thiruvalluvar, of Mayilai Ampathi (Mylapore), famous for poets, in his Thirukural has stated

"Strong walls (val araN), standing water (iru punal i.e. lakes and wells), hills and flowing water (varu punal - i.e. rivers & streams), make for a good country"

and having understood this poem

In 1740 year of SvasthiSree Shaalivaahana calendar, in the English year 1818

In Bahuthaanya year, after the Prabhavati year, having consulted the auspicious signs: Weekday, Thithi, Nakshathra, Yoga and Karnam

on an auspicious day, I have commissioned 27 wells.

I love the phrase I cannot imagine a more beautiful phrase to describe any city, and how fitting that it was coined by a man, who proudly called himself Chennai Pattinaththu Elleesan.

PostScript, June 28: Mr Narasiah, via email, offers this translation by GU Pope, of the TirukkuraL verse mentioned above.

Ch LXXIV Kural No. 7
G U Pope's translation:

Waters from rains and springs
      A mountain near, and waters thence;
Those make a land,
      With fortress' sure defence

Corrections June 22, 2020  Mr N Ganesan, of Houston Texas, has sent me the following text, of the last few verses in the above Ellis inscription. This has the proper grantham transliteration of the Sanskrit words in the Ellis inscription, including character ௵  symbol for வருஷம்(year) and the correct ஶ for words like ஶாலிவாஹந (Shaalivaahana). He has also suggested some spelling corrections, which I have now effected in the Tamil text of the poem.

Chennai? China? Madras? Madrassa?

As part of Tamil Heritage Trust's fifth site seminar, I was one of 30 people who visited several sites in Gujarat recently. "Where are you from?" was a common question. At Sarkhej Roza mosque in Ahmedabad, a young boy asked this question. When my friend VSS Iyer replied "Chennai?", he asked "China?" "No, no, Chennai," his mother laughed "remember the Shah Rukh Khan movie Chennai express?" The boy only nodded vaguely.

At another place, an automobile museum on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, I was asked the same question. Not a boy, 25 years old, in a white uniform, in charge of showing the cars to the visitors. "Madras," I said. "Madrassa?" he asked - a madrassa is a Muslim school, often held in a mosque. "No, Chennai." No recognition. "Shah Rukh Khan, Chennai express?" I added, using a mother's trick. Continued cluelessness.

I said "Jayalalitha, Karunanidhi." No response. "Chennai Superkings? Dhoni?" Blank look. "Tamil Nadu?" Shake of the head. "Kanyakumari, Ramesvaram?" I asked in despair. Very slight nod, "Sunaa," he said, meaning "I think I have heard of those places."

He did not even know Rajini Kanth.

I must say, every other person who ever asked, even those who may have been illiterate, immediately recognized Chennai or Madras.

Mulla Mohammad ali Madrasvala

Almost as a counterpoint, we visited the house of a Bohra Muslim called Mulla Mohammadali Madrasvala in Siddhpur. His descendants -who live in Kotturpuram!- hosted us and let us roam about the place. He is called Madrasvala because in his time he spent most of his money in Madras/Chennai. Sidhdhpur is to Bohra muslims what Karaikkudi is to Chettinadu Nagaraththaars. Mr Taheri Danalivala, who gave us a presentation on Siddhpur and Bohra Muslims, and who himself is now a resident of Chennai, says that when he is called Madrasvala in Gujarat!
