Swami Vivekananda Rural Community College

I visited the Swami Vivekananda Rural Community college near Pondichery with prof Swaminathan and his wife on Monday September 25th.

This is being run as a technical education center for lower middle class students who struggle to continue education for financial or other reasons. The college offers practical training in various mechanical, electrical and computer engineering to their 150 students. Their labs are now sponsored and equipped by companies like Dell Siemens Renault Yamaha etc.

Students learn such skills as

  • repairing or servicing motorbikes, scooters, cars including
  • repairing and servicing plumbing equipment
  • software skills such as Microsoft Office, Tally
  • repairing and servicing desktop and laptop computers and their electronics
  • design of pamphlets posters invitations programs etc
  • medical assistance including for elderly people, pregnant women

Several of these students go on to become entrepreneurs, while quite a few find employment in these companies or others around Pondichery. Several girls are also enrolled, and there is an entire room of both mechanical and electrical sewing machines where they learn various tailoring and embroidery techniques.

We were given a thirty minute tour of several of the labs and classrooms, by a member of the staff Mr Santosh. His pride in the service he was doing and the success of some of the college's students was palpable in his voice. Since we arrived late in the day most of the students had left for the day, and we only spoke very briefly to one student.

The college was founded by Mr Subramaniam, a former colleague of Prof Swaminathan at Delhi, who literally asked for five and ten rupees donations to start this college several years ago. Mr Subramaniam's whole family including wife, son and daughter in law are engaged full time in running this college. They say they dont seek or take any assistance from government organizations. Mr Santosh mentioned that besides teaching the skills they also give basic etiquette training, as in dressing properly, showing up with a presentable appearance, proper behaviour and speech etc.

The college reminded me somewhat of Sevalaya's Mahakavi Bharathi school near Thiruninravur, run primarily by the efforts of Mr Muralidharan.

I must confess, that while the efforts of the founders of such charitable organizations dedicated to education are extremely laudable, I wonder if they are not taking on too big a challenge, trying to outdo what state or local governments are providing with a much larger financial base. I wonder about the sustainability of these ventures past the energetic lives of their founders or most active organizers. Then it occurs to me even governments and private companies have exactly the same issue - in fact, thanks to elections, governments have even briefer tenures : it is the bureaucracy that carries on the larger and somewhat onerous task. Regardless of my prejudice or skepticism they seem to be doing an amazing job.

Watching trains

Most people like to watch the rain, watch a sunrise or sunset, watch wildlife, flowers etc. I like some of these activities watching nature or immersing myself in such, also, but I enjoy the ordinary pleasures of simple engineering and transportation also.

I enjoy riding in buses even when I own a car and can afford to take an auto or taxi. I enjoy traveling in trains. Especially in India. I dont mind that most of our trains are not as fast Japanese or Chinese bullet trains. Slowness is not that bad a feature in Indian trains, it helps us enjoy the countryside so much. Mile after mile of rice field and cotton field and lakes and rivers and canyons mountains, India is a pleasure to ride through, looking out the windows. Even when I travel in AC compartments, in trains, I sometimes stand in the corridor or near the door, the wind and dust whipping hair and skin - almost always there are open doors in most trains, except at night. We get dirty, but that happens anyway, wherever we travel.

Perhaps one of my stranger pleasures is simply watching trains sitting on a railway platform. Our family used to live in Mylapore and when we visited our chithi's family in KK Nagar, one of the delights was the ten seconds of the bus 12 E going over the Kodambakkam bridge and perhaps a fleeting glimpse at the trains running below. Sometimes we would take 12F (which later became 12G) which goes through Mambalam not Kodambakkam, and so we would sometimes watch a train cross the bridge on Brindavan street, and our bus would sometimes go under it. Loved the thunderous noise.

When we first moved to Kodambakkam, I was in class 12, and it was a thrill that I could cross the bridge every day on the way to my school in Royapettai. Either by bus or by bicycle.  The first weekend, I actually took my kid brother and we simply went to the Kodambakkam railway station and sat on a bench on the platform for an hour or so watching trains go by.

Train on Madras-Gummidipoondi line near Chennai Central

Triplicane cricket ground and Marina beach view from MRTS EMU

Between 2000 and 2005 or so, when I had ambitions of becoming a writer, but couldnt complete anything I often went to Mambalam or some other suburban railway station in the evenings and simply sat on the bench, sometimes thinking, sometimes writing. I never became a writer, but enjoyed the moments on the railway platforms, watching people walk around, finishing their days or starting them.

I enjoy railway platforms as much as the beach or some riverside or lakeside. Perhaps very odd in a city with such a magnificent beach. Sometimes when I woke up early I would go early and simply watch trains. (Being a jobless bachelor was a major factor enabling such activities).

Since the advent of Youtube and the smartphone and extremely cheap and plentiful bandwidth, I now have the benefit of vast number of videos of similar minded people. In fact, out there in smaller towns across India, are hundreds perhaps thousands of train lovers with far more dedication and passion, who post videos. There are also aeroplane watchers who take videos of airplanes taking off and landing at various airports, but this is very difficult in India, as most airports are restricted and you can only watch such these while you are a passenger yourself. I enjoy watching planes land or take off and there are some fantastic videos of these also.

There are also train videos of travelers in different countries, and Youtube videos are a great way to discover how different each culture is. America and Europe have such thin populations, and Africa and South America have so few trains, they are not quite as fascinating.

But Indian trains and the kind of videos vloggers make are astounding. There are videos of trains merely arriving or leaving, of trains crossing platforms, people crossing railway tracks just ahead of trains, passenger trains racing, overtaking, zooming past, scenic routes, and so many other fascinating aspects of life and technology, There are viewers who study all the train locomotives and the sheds they are attached to (Erode, Royapuram, Itarsi, Vijayawada etc), their categories of WAP7, WAG5, WAM4 (where P,G,M stand for Passenger Goods and Mixed respectively; WDG WDP etc (D in the middle is diesel engine, A is AC engine); the W stands for broad guage, Meter guage trains had the letter Y. The Beach-Tambaram EMU line was converted from meter guage to broad guage about ten years back, almost the last of the meter guage trains in Tamilnadu. I rode those for nostalgia. The numbers at the end 4,5,7 etc stand for horsepower of the engines. 4 is 4000 HP, 7 is 7000 HP. Excitement prevails over the new 12000 HP engines of Indian Railways

All railway lines south of Madras - from Madras to Madurai and Kanyakumari or Tenkasi or Rameshvaram were meter guage in my college days. Only the railways to the west - Bangalore and Coimbatore - or to the north - Bombay and Delhi and such were broad guage before that. Some trains like those at Ooty and Darjeeling still run on narrow guage rails.

Trains crossing on parallel tracks

Engine coupling to train

The level of their videography, the editing, labeling, fan following (even worldwide) is amazing. This is a world that most people dont know exists. One can see similar videos from other countries also, but like I said there are so few people in those stations or trains, except in very large central stations of cities like London or Paris, they are not as interesting. But one gets very amazing views.

There are some very popular but bizzare trains, from Thailand, Vietnam, and such countries, going through very narrow markets, between rows of housing, etc. There are weird morning commute trains in China and Japan where there are train packers who push people into trains. I think we may see such phenomena soon in India. I once showed such videos to some school kids in Konerirajapuram and they howled with delight. Perhaps you might like them too.

Summer Heat

While studying in Texas, in the 1990s, for a MS degree, I received a job offer from a company called SRD in Phoenix, Arizona. This was after getting zero interviews after mailing out 250 copies of my bio-data/resume in response to newspaper ads.

SRD said it was a three month project at a large company, during which if I did well, I will get be employed full term (with health insurance). So I joined them. I knew Phoenix was a few degrees hotter than Texas, which was about hot as Madras, so I wasnt worried.
Boy, was I wrong. It was the middle of June - the start of summer in USA. Phoenix daily temperatures went upto 110 F, which I had occasionally experienced in Madras, during the 1980s, with no air conditioning, only ceiling fans.

Phoenix, from the sky - July 2015

But 110 in Phoenix was very different from 110 in Madras. Madras gets a sea breeze around 3pm, the worst heat is from 11am to 2pm. Arizona is a desert, so no sea or sea breeze. The part of Texas I lived in was a valley of a river called Brazos and far greener than Phoenix, and also had air conditioning. Summer days in the US are far longer; the sun sets after 8pm only. Bad in Texas, hellish in Phoenix. The roads which had absorbed heat until 8pm were letting out heat well past midnight. So it felt like 100 degrees F even at midnight. No Indian, even a Madrasi is prepared for that.
It is so hot in Phoenix, I heard that it was illegal to keep a store or business open if the AC broke down. When some of us at work went out to lunch, they drivers of cars opened the car door, turned on the engine and AC, then waited outside for two minutes before stepping in to the car. Hasty people have had the skin of their palms melted by the steering wheels of cars heated up in the midday sun.
For about a month, I didn't have a car, so an Indian colleague gave me a ride. I once asked to be dropped off at a store near my flat around 8pm for some grocery shopping; I said I would walk back home. This is when I discovered that the roads give off heat at night. That mile long walk (sorry, hike with two bags of groceries) was absolutely terrible; worse than most of the times I had fever of 102 or more. Two months later I hiked for a mile down and up the Grand Canyon in Arizona at noon, and it was much more pleasant than the walk back from that grocery store at nearly 9pm.
In September I got a job offer in Seattle, and I was so happy to leave Arizona. Seattle was absolute heaven with lakes and mountains with snow and green green trees and grass as far as the eye could see. It rains or drizzles eight months a year in Seattle and a blue sky is always headline news in the local TV stations, but that didn't bother me for another five years.
I learnt the true pleasure of monsoons and rains and the sea breeze from those brief three months in Phoenix, and the marvelous gift of sunny day and blue skies from my five years in Seattle.
Why all this now? The last two weeks this June feel like that summer in Phoenix. Even with Air Conditioning. (I wrote this on my Facebook wall on June 17 and it rained for a week after that).
