A brief timeline of Vaccinations

I am neither a doctor, nor biologist, nor historian. I first studied this for a lecture about Vaccination in Madras, for the Madras Local History Group. I have merely provided some dates and data, for an easier read.

Ignaz Semmelweiss

Before Sterilization and Germ theory

  • 1700s Lady Montague inoculates her children in Turkey, introduces vaccination to England
  •     English aristocrats inoculate their children
  • 1794 Edward Jenner starts variolation and vaccination
  • 1858 Great Stink of London, Thames cleaning begins
  •     Darwin-Wallace paper on Evolution presented by Lyell and Hooker
  •     Five of Darwin's children died in infancy (did vaccination not save them?)
  • 1864 Louis Pasteur discovers Germs cause diseases
  •     Antibodies, white blood cells discovered
  • 1847 Ignaz Semmelweiss discovers importance of sterilization, in Austria
  • 1848-1860 Political Turmoil in Europe
  • 1861 Semmelweiss campaigns for doctors to wash hands between surgeries
  •     Doctors refuse to wash hands, blood stains seen as symbols of valour
  • 1865 Semmelweiss sentenced and imprisoned in a lunatic asylum, for his sterilization campaign; dies

After discovery of Sterilization

  • 1865 Lister advises Wash hands, use gloves, introduces anti-septics
  • 1860 John Snow discovers feces infested water causes cholera, campaigns for clean water.
  •     John Snow: "Boil water before drinking"
  • 1861 Death by typhoid of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria
  •     Campaign to clean up River Thames, London, build sewerage system
  • 1861 Europeanization of toilets, sewers.
  •     Globalization takes another century

Vaccination Laws in England

  •     1840 Free Vaccination
  •     1855 Compulsory Vaccination
  •     1867 Penalty to resist Vaccination

  • 1870 Robert Hooker: "Wallace has lost caste" (because Wallace explored spirituality, seances. Wallace also doubts that human mind evolved by Natural Selection)
  • 1890 Robert Koch : Different germs cause different diseases
  • 1896 Alfred Russel Wallace publishes book "Vaccination a Delusion, its penal enforcement a crime"
(This book by Wallace is out of print. A free version is available on Kindle, but very badly formatted)

I now suspend the timeline for some notes from Wallace's book

Wallace findings

  • Jenner: Less than 2000 deaths upto 1800
  • Parliament 1836: 5000 deaths before 1800
  • Dr Ernest Hart British Medical Journal 1880: 18,000 deaths per million
  • National Vaccination Society 1884: Before vaccination, 40,000 dead in England of pox
  • Wallace quip: "Dead were multiplying in the past"

Wallace observations

  • Villages and small towns rarely had deaths. Also far lower death rates than London
  • Filth diseases caused by foul air and water, decaying organic matter, overcrowding
  • Plague and leprosy not eliminated by vaccines but by marginal improvements in hygiene
  • Replaced by cholera, small pox etc as main killers
  • No careful tests were made with two groups one vaccinated, the other not
  • Doctors are bad statisticians
  • Royal Commission had no statisticians, but doctors, lawyers and politicians

Fortunately, unlike Semmelweiss, Wallace was not hounded into a lunatic asylum

(Gopu comment: Cheap cotton textiles, mainly imported from India via several East India Companies, from 1640 onwards, probably played a big role in improving European hygiene. As did the Cotton revolution in England from 1740 onwards.

Also cheaper coal because of James Watt engine made hot water far far cheaper. Average Europeans could bathe in winter almost as often as residents of tropics)

The Timeline continues...

PreModern Era of Medicine

  • 1890 German company Bayer invents Aspirin. Era of chemical medicine, pills, pharmaceutical industry begins
  • Insulin discovered
  • 1930s  Heroin, cocaine, all kinds of snake oil sold over the counter in USA
Modern Era of medicine
  • 1940 Sulfa, Antibiotics make Western medicine better than medicine of other nations for the first time in history (warning: this is only Gopu's opinion)
  • Rate of decline of death rates go from 2% per year to 8% per year, some of it is credited to vaccines
  • 1945 Transistor invented. Integrated circuits follow soon. Electronic devices make research and medicine far superior in a short time
  • 1954 Polio vaccine invented
  • 1960 Measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine invented (Estimate 5000 deaths prevented in 20 years)
  • 1970 Smallpox eradicated
  • 1994 Plague suspected in Surat, Gujarat, India cut off from world for two weeks
  • 2000s Potential epidemics SARS, Ebola, swine flu, bird flu, curtailed before pandemic
  • 2020 January - COVID-19 Coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan, China; parts of Italy, USA; several air travelers
  • 2020 March - Global lockdowns begin
  • 2019 November - Announcements of several COVID-19 vaccines, from UK, USA, Russia, China

Explanatory Note

A small but vocal anti-vaccination movement is active in USA. Wikipedia calls is vaccine hesitancy. But such movements have been common throughout history, not just against vaccination, but against other new forms of medicine or science. Science usually wins, but frequently, what was considered turns out to be very unscientific - examples are : the four humours, phlogistons, phrenology, eugenics, vital forces theory, philosophers stone, Lysenko genetics, and possibly string theory.  Some of these people are extremely unscientific, religious (usually Christian - in the USA), some simply are suspicious of governments and doctors.

If he were alive today, Alfred Wallace would also be labeled anti-vax and "denier". As his colleague Robert Hooker noted, "Wallace had lost caste."

Make of it what you will

Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection - 6 - Ten books that influenced me

For almost  every biologist, Charles Darwin is the supreme scientist, the pitamaha of the field. Alfred Russel Wallace is almost always mentioned as an afterthought, the also ran. And invariably only as someone who also discovered Natural Selection. The story is more complex and I have written elsewhere about him.

Wallace not only lived longer, explored more places and animals, observed uniquely, imagine wider and wrote better. Not only did he write better than Darwin, he wrote better than almost any other scientist in any other field. And he wrote so well and so lucidly, unabashed in his firmness of thought and felicity of expression.

This collection of essays is one such wonderful example. I found it in the Anna Centennial Library, started reading an essay or two, and was struck with wonder. I didnt know whether to marvel at the English, at the flow of thought, the breadth and depth of observations and inferences, their significance to biology, or how almost nothing I had read in scientific literature is so simple or elegant.

After reading this I started reading other original sources in English. I discovered that JBS Haldane, Thomas Huxley, Stephen Jay Gould, Nick Lane and Matt Ridley are other authors who I could read and understand at first go. Strangely the other books and essays of Wallace are not so easy to come by. No bookstore stocks them, only some are in Amazon. I particularly took a liking to his essay titled the Philosophy of the Birds' Nests; even the topic should astonish and provoke curiosity.

The obscurity of Wallace and his neglect by the scientific community were governed primarily by atheists, and to some extent Marxists, capturing scientific laboratories, journals, academia, media, entertainment etc. Religion has been more successfully attacked, mocked and derided in the twentieth century than in all previous centuries combined. Wallace's experiments with spirituality, and his speculation that the unique evolution of the Human race could not have come along by natural selection alone, were an existential threat to the atheistic dogma that governs science nowadays. But that is a pity, because he was truly a marvelous writer.

I hope you read and enjoy this book.

Alfred Russel Wallace

January 8 is the birth anniversary of Alfred Russel Wallace. Last year, I was given an opportunity to write this essay for the online edition of New Indian Express by R Venkatasubramaniam. I share this now on my blog, partly named after him.
-------------

Charles Darwin and Theory of Evolution are famous. But how many know that Darwin was not the only person who discovered either evolution, or its primary mechanism, Natural Selection? How many know of Alfred Russel Wallace, one of the greatest biologists the world has known?

Most of us learn from textbooks in schools. But often, text books, especially on science, are dry collections of facts, which offer neither context nor history to great discoveries or adventures. It is the great failure of poets, novelists and filmmakers, that they rarely laud the accomplishments of great scientists or engineers, even though the world we live in has been dramatically modernized, modified and made a wonderful place because of their superhuman talents and efforts.

Wallace was as great a scientist as Newton and Darwin!
Wallace as a young man

Alfred Wallace was born in England, in a family that was poor but educated. His father died when he was seven. So he joined his elder brother William as an apprentice surveyor. While traversing the countryside surveying land, he was fascinated by plants and began collecting them. Darwin was already famous in England, because he had traveled around the world for five years in a British ship called HMS Beagle, studying biology, and had written a very popular book, “The Voyages of the Beagle.” Darwin himself had been inspired by the travels and adventures of Alexander von Humboldt, a German scientist. Humboldt’s book “Personal Narrative of a Journey to the Equinoctial Regions of the New Continent” caused a sensation in Europe.

In India, even in school, we read about the travels of Fa Hien and Hiuen Tsang, Buddhist pilgrims; ibn Batuta, a lawyer; and Marco Polo, a businessmen. Humboldt was the first modern scientist whose travelogues became famous. The New Continent was America; it was Humboldt’s accounts of the Amazon that awed and inspired Darwin and a whole generation of adventurous Naturalists. (The word science was coined only in the 19th century; before that scientists were called Naturalists or Natural Philosophers). Darwin himself traveled to South America, to the coral islands of the Pacific, to Australia and New Zealand. On the ship Darwin read Charles Lyell’s book on geology, and saw evidence of geological phenomena wherever he went, and understood how much geology influenced biology. He formed several ideas about evolution but did not yet publish them.

The young Wallace went to public libraries and read pamphlets written and printed by popularizers of Natural Philosophy. One book that inspired Wallace was Lindsey’s “Elements of Botany.”

In 1848, an economic recession gripped England; Wallace lost his job. He enrolled in Mechanical College, a low cost school set up by industrialists to educate poor youth. There he befriended Henry Bates, another keen naturalist. They read Humboldt and Darwin and dreamed of voyages to the Amazon and discovering new species. In those days, rich collectors in Europe were fascinated by collections of butterflies, beetles, fossils, exotic plants etc and would pay naturalists good money for rare collections. Wallace and Bates hoped to sell such collections to finance their travel and scientific pursuits. They got a chance to travel to South America. For four years they explored the Amazon and its tributaries, sometimes together, sometimes apart. They suffered from all kinds of diseases, barely escaping death a few times. Alfred’s brother who accompanied them was not so lucky; he died of a tropical disease, and Alfred only found out months later. Wallace meticulous collected thousands of species of insects birds reptiles; drew several thousands sketches, and shipped some to his agent in London, who sold a few. But he did not form any scientific theories or publish any papers.

In 1852, he set sail for England. (Bates continued in South America for seven more years.) Misfortune hounded Wallace. His ship caught fire mid-sea. He lost almost all his collections, painstakingly gathered over four years. Wallace escaped on a life boat with some others, but they almost died of thirst before they were rescued by another ship. Wallace returned to England almost as poor as he left it, but his agent had insured his collection, so he was able to salvage some money.

In 1854, Wallace set sail for Singapore, and explored the islands there for the next eight years. and wrote a book about their biology, The Malay Archipelago. He noticed something strange – the birds and animals of Bali were remarkably different from those of Lombok, though both islands were only fifteen kilometers apart. Species on one island, related to Australian species, were totally absent on the other with Asian species; and vice versa. He realized this was true of several islands. Wallace hypothesized that in the remote past one group of islands had been part of Asia, the other part of Australia, and their geological break up was reflected in their species differences. He drew a line on the map demarcating this geological break; this line was later named the Wallace Line by Thomas Huxley. The field of Bio-geography was born, created by Wallace!

He wrote letters to Darwin, who occasionally responded . His first scientific essay on speciation, excited Darwin’s geology guru Lyell, but neither Darwin nor other naturalists were impressed.

Meanwhile, Lyell urged Darwin to publish his theory of Evolution, but Darwin delayed. Wallace mailed a second essay titled On the Tendency of Varieties to depart indefinitely from the Original Type, which hit Darwin like a bombshell. Darwin was astounded that someone far away with no scientific reputation had so brilliantly and concisely summarised Darwin’s theory.

He regretted having ignored Lyell’s advice on publishing. He lamented that he had lost his precedence of discovery. His conscience would not allow him to betray Wallace’s confidence. But Lyell and Hooker, another naturalist, persuaded Darwin to let them present Darwin and Wallace’s theories jointly, which they did at the Linnaean Society in June 1858.

It was then that Wallace’s greatest act of decency came shining through. He applauded Lyell and Hooker, and thanked them for not taking away the rightful credit of Darwin’s two decades of work and the fame discovery from Darwin! He even published a book titled Darwinism, which explained evolution more clearly and eloquently than Darwin!

Essays on Scientists in New Indian Express

In December, VR Devika of Aseema recommended my name to the editor of The Week,  to write an article on Aryabhata for their anniversary special issue "History of India through 25 people."

A week back, Venkatasubramanian Ramamurthy asked me to begin a series of weekly essays for the online edition of New Indian Express. The series is titled, "Shoulders of Giants". The first essay is on Alfred Russel Wallace, the great biologist, who discovered Evolution and it's primary mechanism, Natural Selection,  almost simultaneously with Charles Darwin, but sadly remains in the latter's shadow.

My blog is titled Ajivaka Wallacian, partly after Wallace.  When I wrote about the Wallace Line in an email a few years back, Badri Seshadri urged me to start a blog and not confine myself to emails.

I start a different blog in 2007 but only wrote a few articles, then gave it up. I decided to start this blog in 2012, on the day the Mayan calendar reset itself. I didn't know then that the two hundredth birthday of Wallace followed shortly on January 2013. What a sad state of affairs, that it was not celebrated by biologists with great fanfare. It would be a while before I wrote of Wallace and the Birds of Paradise, in Tamil.

My first public essay in my blog was about Haber and Bosch and their invention of a brilliant process to extract nitrogen from the air and make artificial fertilizer. It will be my second essay in the Express series, next week.

I'm grateful to Venkatasubramanian (RVS) for the opportunity to write for the Express! That too on science!

(Personal Narrative of Voyages to the Equinoctial Regions)

(On the Origin of the Species by means of Natural Selection)

பரிணாம வளர்ச்சி தத்துவத்தை பற்றி “On the Tendency of Varieties to depart indefinitely from the Original Type” என்ற தலைப்பில் எழுதி, டார்வினுக்கு அனுப்பினார்.

Symbiogenesis - alternate to Darwin's theory of evolution

In the media, especially American, there is often uproar about Creationism, a christian denial of Darwin's theory of evolution. In the Indian media, biology and chemistry are thoroughly ignored. Famous scientists / public speakers especially Richard Dawkins, thunder away with dogmatic militant atheism, as though Christianity were the big challenge to Darwin & Wallace's theory. The views of people like Stephen Jay Gould, who called religion Non-overlapping magisterium, get muted in the public discourse, and his explanations like 'punctuated equilibirium' are generally unknown, as are recent terrific advances in genetics. Meanwhile, in the last HUNDRED years, an alternate set of theories and ideas have cropped up - symbiogenesis, primarily - that seeks to explain missing gaps and illustrates a brilliant mechanism for speciation, which is stunningly ignored in the media, academia, and even intellectual circles, while they bombard us with incomprehensibles like string theory, dark matter and Higgs boson.

For those interested, here is something scientific, from a wonderful scientist. I wish there were some good illustrated talks on the subject. The article may be hard to follow for those who havent read about it, and even more so for those who defend evolution without understanding its elements- in that field I recommend Alfred Russel Wallace's brilliant book "Darwinism" over Darwin's own hard to follow book "Origin of Species."

Update: For an introduction to some of the topics discussed in the above article, I recommend watching these videos on Youtube.

I read Nick Lane's book "Power, Sex, Suicide" a few years back. It explains how mitochondria, which have their genome outside the nucleus of a cell, power the cell, help it respire, and pass on their DNA called mtDNA along via the maternal line to the offspring. Basically the book explained the physics and chemistry of the eukaryotic cell - i.e a cell with a nucleus, and how it differs from a prokaryotic cell - a cell without a nucleus. The formation of nucleus and absorption of mitochondria was a non-evolutionary event, in the Darwinian sense.

This video of Dr Nick Lane illustrates some aspects of the book. Excellent!

This is a much simpler and smaller lecture by same author, Nick Lane, but without pictures, sadly.
