Muthuswamy Deekshithar - Notes from a 2017 lecture by V Sriram

These are my notes from a lecture at Vani Mahal, Thyagaraya Nagar in December 2017.

-----

Marvelous lighting at the mini hall in Vani Mahal, such that the speaker Sriram Venkatakrishnan was well lit, without shining on the large the screen displaying his PowerPoint and pictures. There were some projector hiccups halfway but overcome.

From an early move out of Vellore because of a power struggle in the fort, to the expertise of Ramaswami Deekshitar, in Jayadeva's Ashtapathi, to the travels, career and musical virtuosity of his son, Muthuswamy, born by the blessing of the eponymous God in Vaideesvaran temple, it was a comprehensive lecture, as profuse in scholarship as it was delightful in diction and delivery, in not one but three languages.

One could write a twenty page book just from the lecture. I'll list some highlights.

A background of Tanjavur Mahratta politics including Amarasimha, Tulaji, saraboji, Father Schwartz.

Early life in Govindapuram.

Sonti Venkataramana, guru of Thyagayya, was impressed by Deekshitars teaching skills.

Venkatamakhin and his Chatur Dandika Prakasika, containing the melakartas, whose rare copy Muthuswamy had the good fortune of receiving.

Patronage by Manali Muthukrishna Mudali, the Dubash of Madras, and by his son. Songs lauding them, which contrast with other accounts of their lives.

The band in Fort st George, which inspired the nottu swarams, and the adoption of the violin in carnatic music.

Two wives.

A deep knowledge of Tevaram songs, which reflected in several compositions in Sanskrit.

Later settlement in Kanchipuram and encounter with Upanishad Brahmendra, whose mutt survives. Songs on the Somaskanda of Ekamreshvara, with poetic description of the sthala purana, and word play on ma skanda and moola skanda.

A tour of several nearby temples including Kalahasti, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupati. Perhaps a reference to laddu!

A reference to Gnanasambanda as Uttamavipra in his song on Arunachala and his legend of sighting the hill from a distance, and how this episode repeated later in the life of Ramana.

A voyage to Kashi with all its perils, almost surely, entirely by foot. The episode of Ganga gifting a veenai to Baluswamy Deekshitar his brother. Let's just say he came back with a veena, quipped Sriram. A very small veena, perhaps three feet long, which the family preserved and showcased at the Music academy in 1975, the 200th anniversary of Deekshitar.

Life in Tiruvarur, famous also for the life of Nayanmar Sundaramoorthy. The mysteries of the Thyagesa idol, eternally covered from the neck down, which inspired a superb song by another composer. A mysterious closed shrine perhaps of Vishnu behind it, and the oft ignored Valmikinatha, the real moolavar. More on Kamalambal, Katyayani both more celebrated than Neelotpalambal, the primary consort. Katyayani is the Lord's concubine or main Rudra ganika, and the model for all devadasis. In fact it is believe that the devadasi tradition began at this temple. And the erotic sculpture of Uchishta Ganapathi, and it's tantric worship, which Muthuswamy must have practiced as a Sri Vidya upasaka.

The variety and range of his disciples from different communities, including devadasis and the Tanjavur quartet.

Muthuswamy composed music for Rama Ashtapathi, composed by someone else, but unfortunately these haven't survived. Or else we would have known how he set others composition to music, as musician Sriram Parasuram (present at the lecture) observed elsewhere, the speaker adds. (Another singer Ramakrishna Murthy was also in the audience).

Songs on several temples around the Kaveri built including Tayumanavar whom he calls Matrubutha, and various navagraha shrines. Waxing eloquent at Tirukannamangai, where bhkatas believe the devas reside as bees, and the Thayar shrine still has a beehive perhaps two centuries old, that the archaka shows to visitors. Tirumangai Alwar has a mischevous passuram here, where he advises not just Vaishnavas but also Vishnu himself that singing his ten songs will benefit the singer.

Ratnagiri temple, populated by monkeys, where the devotees fill a large copper vessel from the Kaveri, eight km away, and then take it up the thousand steps for abishekam. They did it during his times, as recorded in his song, and they do it today.

Songs on navagraha shrines in the hinterland. Travel to Madurai and Ettayapuram , famous for its betrayal of Kattabommu, but whose king Deekshitar praised. The court appreciated the novelty of the violin as a carnatic instrument. Songs on Meenakshi and Azhagar.

We should recognize that Deekshitar was human, needed patrons, was practical, and not just cover him in saintliness, said Sriram. Final samadhi there. Now, there is a memorial mandapam, which a collector recently wanted to demolish as an illegal structure. Fortunately, it survives.

Darwin and his doctor

After his voyage (1831-1836) on the ship HMS Beagle, when he sailed around the world studying and learning about biology and geology, Charles Darwin, settled down in England and wrote the book the Voyage of the Beagle. It was a bestseller, as far as travel narratives went, and inspired later explorers like Alfred Russel Wallace to also travel to South America.

Darwin spent the next twenty years gathering material from across the world, communicating with botanists and zoologists and collectors and experts in various other fields. He had formed the outline for the theory of speciation and his proposal for its mechanism - natural selection; but he kept it secret. But he made a significant reputation as a geologist, writing a major book on coral reefs. His explanation of the slow elevation of the landmass of South America - he had seen fossils of marine creatures high up in the Andes - was enthusiastically welcomed by his mentor and new friend in Geology, Charles Lyell. Darwin had taken Lyell's book Principle of Geology, on his voyage and it had helped him understand biology in a way no one else previously could.

In the meanwhile, in the 1840s, one of his friends asked him to study barnacles, and explain them since there was such confusion about them. Darwin estimated it would take him a month. It took him eight years.

This fascinating side-track to his researches is beautifully narrated in a book, Darwin and the Barnacle, by Rebecca Stott. I have been going to the Anna Centennial Library in Kotturpuram, Madras, for the past few weeks and reading this book. This library is a treasure house of wonderful books on all subjects and one of my great delights has been reading Wallace’s books there, among others. But this time, Darwin.

What fascinated me about this book, were two lateral matters : Darwin’s medical treatment and his fiscal situation. Darwin was a frequently sick person, suffering from several ailments of the stomach. He suffered terribly through his ocean voyages. Land did not improve things. But he was receiving barnacles by email, dissecting barnacles, discussing barnacles, occasionally going to the sea to collect barnacles, discovering new species of barnacles, getting confused by their variety and bizarreness. For a while barnacles were his only pleasure, besides his children.

Darwin's Water Cure

Dr James Gully, who was recommended by the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, an acquaintance of  Darwin, had some severe but effective methods treatment. One was the wet-wrap ; a wet sheet wrapped tightly around his body, almost like an Egyptian mummy.

Another was the douche, a French word meaning shower. But this was no simple shower. A 640 gallon water tank was install on a stage in an outhouse of Darwin’s house – this let out water through a two inch pipe. This may not sound like much to those of us who have been soaked in the waterfalls like Courtallam or Papanasam or Ambasamudram, but Darwin lived in much colder England. One must also remember that modern plumbing system, with piped water, hot and cold, had not been invented yet.

The freakiest treatment Darwin underwent, was lamp baths. We don’t associate lamps with baths! How do you bathe with a lamp? In this system, one sat on a stool wrapped in towels with a lamp under the stool getting warmer and warmer, until suddenly sweat poured down like a torrent. This sounds more like cooking than curing!

To top it all, Dr Gully’s water cure included
1.     Homeopathy
2.     Mesmerism
3.     Hydropathy
Gully’s philosophy was that the body's "natural energies" would cure itself.

Allopathic (Western medicine) doctors today consider these to be nothing but quackery, with no scientific basis whatsoever. Think about the irony of this : the world’s most famous biologist was treated by a famous London doctor by methods that are laughed at today. Of such episodes is made the history relevant to the common man, more than the wars and wealth and the romances of rulers and armies.

It was only in the next few decades that such standard practices such as sterilization, the importance of clean water, chemical pills etc were discovered. And the invention of antibiotics had to wait until the Second World War.

A later story is illuminating. American President James Garfield was shot by an assassin. The doctors tried to extract a bullet by using their bare fingers! He died two months later, most likely by infection. The shooter was hanged for assassination, even though, it is quite possible that it was the doctors’ unsterilized probing that mostly killed Garfield. Closer home, V Krishnaswamy Iyer of Madras, died of a septic infection when the medal pinned on him in the 1911 Delhi Durbar by King George the Fifth pricked his skin! This would be cured by cheap medicine today.

Coming back to Darwin’s treatment. In addition, Dr Gully issued these orders.

No work
Minimal reading
No writing (except a few minutes a day)
No sugar, salt, rich foods stimulants alcohol or snuff.
Also forbidden : barnacles!

Stott writes that this ban on barnacles was the hardest thing Darwin had to bear. He was equally appalled at the ban on snuff, but his daughter Annie would occasionally smuggle it into his study, it seems!

Darwin used his writing allowance to write letters to collect barnacles from others!

The Curiosity of Englishmen

The sheer variety of collectors and enthusiasts is mind numbing, and gives an insight into the scientific spirit and curiosity of segments of England’s population of those times. If Britannia ruled the waves, it was not merely by military power, naval power or the business skills of its traders – these endeavors played a significant part in England’s significant role in the 19th century, which continues today.

James Bowerbank, London distillery owner and sponge collector sent Darwin barnacles attached to his sponges. Edward Forbes, banker and son of a timber merchant, followed Alexander the great's Asian route and discovered 18 buried cities! He explored sea creatures in Lycian coast, where Aristotle had once walked and wrote books on starfish and jelly fish , became professor of botany at King's college. Such brilliant collectors and the newly established efficient and dependable postal system (more on it later) were the substrate of infrastructure that helped Darwin become such a brilliant biologist. No wonder then, that several thoughtful Indians in the nineteenth century, welcomed British rule as benevolent and beneficent, a magnificent harness pulling India along into a glorious new scientific age.

On the Tendency of Varieties to depart indefinitely from the Original Type” என்ற தலைப்பில் எழுதி, டார்வினுக்கு அனுப்பினார்.

Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch

Two German scientists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, devised chlorine gas weapons that were used against French and British troops, in the First World War. Haber’s first wife committed suicide. Then they went on to invent new forms of explosives. During the Second World War, they worked for Hitler, developing a coal based substitute for petroleum that fuelled Nazi planes and trucks.

I had never heard of them until last year. I suspect you, the reader, are reading about them for the first time.

These two men are my heroes - more than Einstien, Salk, Fleming, Bardeen, Rutherford.

Why?

In 1900, the world had two billion people. In 2013, it has seven billion. How did this population explosion happen? Why has there been no famine due to food shortage? All famines in the last two hundred years have been because of wars, lack of access or poor administration. Food deficit has NEVER been an issue.

80% of the food humans eat, by weight, comes from only 12 species of plants – rice, wheat, corn, barley, sorghum, soybean, manioc, potato, sweet potato, sugarcane, sugar-beet and banana. They need the right soil and water, but also a vital fertilizing element – nitrogen. The Earth’s atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, but in this form, plants cannot use it. They need something called fixed nitrogen, which is produced by lightning, natural nitrates in the soil, animal dung, decaying plant material and certain legumes.

Crucially, the amount of fixed nitrogen available by these natural processes limits the amount of food crops
humans can grow, regardless of the land and water available. In the 19th century, this problem was circumvented by expanding the area of land under cultivation and utilizing mountains of guano (bat and bird dung) and saltpeter discovered in South America. Europe imported guano from South America like they imported spices and clothes from India, silk and tea from China and slaves from Africa – in ship loads.

In the twentieth century, these South American supplies ran out. So, nitrogen shortage threatened food supply; unless somebody discovered a way to manufacture artificial fertilizer, using the nitrogen in the atmosphere. This is exactly what Haber and Bosch did. They invented the Haber-Bosch process, ammonia fertilizers, massive factories that would produce them in vast quantities.

They won Nobel prizes for this – Haber in 1920 and Bosch in 1932. France was hunting for Haber as a war criminal, and he was hiding in Switzerland, but after he was awarded the Nobel, France gave up the hunt. For the next decade, France and England used their armies to try to steal the industrial secret that the Haber-Bosch process was; but it was too complex to be copied or stolen and too vital to be destroyed. The great fear was that it not only produced ammonia fertilizer, but also explosives for Hitler’s army.

Today all nitrogen fertilizer is produced by the Haber-Bosch process. Four billion people owe their existence to their invention, but are ignorant that such men lived and what they gave the world.

I will stop here, since it is already three paragraphs more than I planned to write. I read about them in a book called “The Alchemy of Air”, by Thomas Hager. Another excellent resource is Vaclav Smil.
