Patrick and Dakota

My brother Jayaraman and I toured the USA in July-August 2015. Mostly we visited our relatives, and met some friends. We visited some museums – and a memorial : what I’d like to call a Science Yatra. But we also had some fun. When we visited Ramanujam, our cousin’s son, in Rockville, Maryland, which is near the US capital Washington, DC, we went with him to Harper’s Ferry in the neighboring state of West Virginia, for a day of zip-line adventure.

A zip-line is literally a rope between two trees (or perhaps, in more adventurous versions, two cliffs with a canyon between them). Ziplines seem to have become a popular daytime activity recently. I don’t remember any in the 1990s, which I mostly spent in the US. I spent three years in College Station, TX, where my adventures were mostly exams, homework and occassionally playing basketball. Then I spent three months in Phoenix, Arizona – and had two wonderful vacations.

Once to Yellowstone National Park, 1200 miles from Phoenix; I rented a car and drove most of that distance back and forth, and since most of my earlier car trips were twenty miles or less, driving was the major adventure. The second time was a trip to Las Vegas where I kept my money, and to the Grand Canyon, where I kept my footing - I hiked a mile down the canyon in very slipppery shoes, cheerfully reassuring my friend Anil Annadatta that it was less dangerous than it looked, and avoided all talk of insurance or last wills.

I moved to Seattle in September 1994, and in the five years there, I developed a love of nature and outdoor sports and activities – whitewater rafting and skydiving were perhaps the two most adventurous things I did. I tried skiing a couple of times, but the cold put me off, even more than the several falls on hard concrete when I tried roller blading in Texas. At various times, I tried water skiing, kayaking, rock climbing (indoors only), paragliding once. The one activity that never appealed is bungee jumping. I wanted to go scuba diving, but never overcame the inertia. Someday. I’ll never forgive myself for not yet whitewater rafting either on the Brahmaputra, or in the much nearer Coorg part of Karnataka.

The zipline was new. While in California a fortnight earlier, I saw an ad for zipline through the canopies of the Sequoia forest, but I had some logistical difficulty renting a car, so reluctantly didn’t try it. When Ramanujam suggested we zipline when we visited him, I jumped at the chance and roped (sorry) my brother in.

Ramanujam had already been on other zipline tours in more scenic places apparently. He wanted to zipline over deep ravines or rapids with the occassional crocodile snapping at his heels. That morning at Harper’s Ferry, even the mosquitos were taking it easy.

So he was a little disappointed. But Jayaram and I were quite excited. And the whole trip was totally enhanced because of the constant chit chat and banter of our guides, Patrick and Dakota. Guides in America, especially on outdoor activities, are often a delight. Most of them have a terrific sense of humor (their school teachers and family members may disagree vehemently), and are trying to liven up the situation. During this visit, I found quite a few docents in museums quite informative and delightful. Our bus driver, in LA, from our hotel in Anaheim to Universal Studios in Hollywood, would have been a successful standup comedian in the 1980s or 1990s. (Today’s standup comedians seem far more vulgar and politically partisan).

Patrick and Dakota knew their jobs, but they were intent on jokes from the start. And they kicked off with self deprecating sardarji type jokes popular in India, but about West Virginia – which is not far from the capital Washington DC, but has a reputation as a rustic rural state. The popular silly stereotypes about West Virginians is that they are poor, uneducated, not sophisiticated, ungrammatical, casual about hygiene, etc. In Texas, they talk about Louisiana and Arkansas thus, in Louisiana (and perhaps Arkansas) they mock Alabama, and in Alabama they mock Mississipi. In Seattle, they mocked small towns like Enumclaw and Bothell. No different from the bhadralok of Calcutta mocking Biharis ; or Bangaloreans and Bombaywallas snobbing over the rest of India. No doubt the people of Mississipi and Bothell pine away in their beds, lamenting their inability to learn from the morality of Hollywood or the gentle civility of New York.

So Patrick shoots: “How do we know that a West Viriginan invented the toothbrush?” Dakota answers, “Anyone else would have called it a teethbrush.”

“Why are the fences in West Virginia like the US Congress?” “Because they are all crooked and pointing at each other.”

Patrick, Gopu and Dakota

Fences in West Viriginia

And on and on. On the bus, on the walk from the bus to the trees, on the treeposts, while we waited for each person to zip off to the next tree, all the way. Jayaram and I cracked a few jokes we knew too, and they had a few chuckles. It’s amazing how much care they took to suit up each person, make sure all their straps and buckles are in place, went through a back and forth protocol over walkie talkies, and ensured that every safety precaution was followed. For anyone who grew up traveling on bus footboards in India, and see the utter chaos of our traffic, the disregard for safety among construction workers, drivers, pedestrians, electricians, even parents for their children, American safety standards are amazing. Patrick repeatedly warned Ramanujan from mindlessly fiddling with his buckle – “That’s the only thing keeping you from falling off the rope . Fiddle once more and I will let you off the group, and you will have to walk back from here,” he warned. It worked. Jayaram said there were people at Niagara falls who simply refunded your money and wouldn’t let you on the boat if you didn’t wear a life jacket. At Kanyakumari, on the ferry from the mainland to Viveknanda Rock, they barely have enough life jackets for each person, and half the passengers wont put them on. No one cares.

The diligence and the sense of humor go well beyond adventure tours. I visited quite a few museums in the US, in what I’d like to call a Science Yatra and the docents who guided us around were quite excellent too. On Sunday, I guided some school teachers from Trichy around the Bronze and Amaravati and Sculpture galleries of the Egmore museum, on Badri Seshadri’s recommendation. They enjoyed it, though they could only see a selection of exhibits, in the two hours that I wandered around with them. Only the Tamil and History teachers stayed with me, the Science teachers were interested in other things. I will write about docents separately.

Science Yatra to the USA

Around this day last year, July 16, 2015, I visited the United States after a fifteen year hiatus. I lived, studied, and worked in the US between 1991 and 2000, when I returned to India , hoping to embark on a writing career, which never took off – I don’t think I have the discipline to be a writer. In 2000, I thought that what I wanted out of life was a career in a different field for every decade of my life. Now I realize that I need not have conceptually compartmentalized my life by decades. I can be interested in multiple things concurrently, though perhaps I cant really have a career in any of them.

Since I quit my software career, I have been mostly reading books, on a variety of subjects. Three subjects which I found boring in my teens and twenties, Art, Biology and Economics, have captured my attention in the last ten years or so. In the last couple of years, especially after reading Thomas Hager’s excellent book, The Alchemy of Air, on the Haber Bosch process, I have been fascinated by Chemistry and its modern history – and how poorly this history is explained to us or discussed in public fora.

But in the last few years, I have had a chance to travel to some parts of India, mostly visiting temples, more for their art, sculputre and painting, than for spiritual or religious pursuit. Occasionally, in India, I have visited places that provoke scientific curiosity or are famous for a scientist / mathematician, like :

·         the Calcutta Botanical Gardens
·         the Trivandrum Museum which has a marvelous Biology exhibit, especially, a superb Invertebrates section
·         Ramanujan museum in Royapuram, Madras
·         Ramanujan house in Kumbakonam
·         Vishveshvarayya Museum, Bangalore
·         Gass Forest Museum, Coimbatore, which has a fantastic butterfly collection
·         Gunduperumbedu fossil site, near Sriperumbudur, TN
·         Tiruvakkarai fossil site, near Vilupuram, TN

Unfortunately, except for the fossil sites, almost everything related to science in India, is of the British period or later. I would have loved to visit an Aryabhata museum in Bihar, a Varahamihira museum in Ujjain or a Brahmagupta musuem in Rajasthan – or even their birthplaces. We have no such thing; there are even scholarly disputes over where they were born or which city they lived in.

Anyway, ever since I read books like Charles Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle, Alfred Russel Wallace’s Contributions to the Theory of natural selection, Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel and perused portions of Henry Bates’ Naturalist on the River Amazons, Alexander von Humboldt’s Personal Narrative of a Journey to the Equinoctial Regions of a New Continent, and most influentially, Iain McCalman’s book Darwin’s Armada, I developed the urge to travel the world, and see its scientific treasures, not just its artistic wonders or other monuments, mostly political. My innate laziness, ridiculous visa hassles, extreme fussiness and wariness over food, and lack of like-minded travel companions have held me back from doing indulging. I’ve wanted to visit Europe, especially Germany, Greece and Italy for the last three years. Similarly Brazil, Mexico, China, Japan, and of course, in the footsteps of Wallace to the islands of Indonesia. I’m even quite tempted to visit Baghdad, scientific centre of the 8th and 9th centuries, though it’s perhaps not suitable now. And Khwarizem, home of two all times greats, Muhammad bin Musa al Khwarizmi and Muhammad bin Ahmad al Biruni.

Considering all this, it was simply easier to visit the US. I already had a visa, and I could see friends and family there. Also food is not a problem in the USA, and I was looking forward to various cuisines I became accustomed to in the years when I lived there. I had a multi-city tour planned, which didn’t work out, because I had some problem renting a car, but it turned out to be good luck, because this way I spent less time traveling between cities and more time visiting actual places of interest. Everywhere I went, except LA, I ended up staying with family.

These are the places of scientific interest which I visited in the US

·         July 24 - Golden Gate Park, San Francisco
·         July 25 - Botanical Garden in the Golden Gate Park
·         July 27 - Stanford University campus tour, Palo Alto
·         July 28 - Computer History Museum, Mountain View, California
·         Aug 1 - Atlanta Botanical Garden
·         Aug 6 - Natural History Museum, Washington DC
·         Aug 7 - Aviation and Space Museum, Washington DC
·         Aug 9 - Benjamin Franklin Museum, Philadelphia
·         Aug 10 - American History Museum (Edison exhibit), Washington DC
·         Aug 13 - Norman Borlaug Center, College Station, Texas

I started the visit with a tour of popular tourist spots in southern California – Seaworld in San Diego and Disneyland and Universal Studios in Los Angeles. The tour of the Library of Congress, especially its paintings and statues turned out to be as substantially about a vision of Science, as of books in general. I got a lot of advice from various people on places to visit, but I haven’t written about most of the places I visited, yet, except San Francisco Botanical Garden and the first Google computer at Stanford. And Facebook has started to toss up memories from last year. I will write about some of these in the next couple of months. I regret not going again this summer; I should have planned visits to Chitchen Itza and Tenochtitlan and of course, the Burgess Shale, in Canada.

If you have undertaken a Science Yatra of some sort, please let me know. I’d love to read about it, and perhaps visit the sites.

Madras and it's American connections

Mr S Muthiah gave a lecture on Madras and its American connection, at CP Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation, Alwarpet, Madras on April 9, 2016. Muthiah's birthday was on April 13 - two days back; by coincidence, I reviewed Mr Narasiah's book, Madrasapattinam, for which Mr Muthiah has written the foreword, that evening.

The connection started long before the founding of the USA, he said. He covered the period from colonial America to the recent establishment of the Roja Muthiah Research Library in Taramani.

He started with Elihu Yale, Governor of Madras for the East India Company and the obelisk in Madras Law College. Yale married the widow Catherine of his friend Joseph Hymner, then sent her off to England; he then had two rich widows living with him.

There was an enquiry into his wealth. He managed to avoid the enquiry, which  was conducted in his absence. But he was acquitted. He acquired a large collection of arts with his wealth. He donated two trunks of textiles and a trunk of paintings and artifacts which were auctioned for 1200 pounds to the Collegiate School of Connecticut, which named itself Yale college; later this became Yale University. If 1200 pounds seems a small founding amount, remember that John Harvard donated 1100 pounds to the college named after him, quipped Mr Muthiah.

A sailing ship called United States was the first American ship to visit India. The most popular export from Madras was bandanas - which became the signature fashion statement of American cowboys. Second in popular was the Madras handkerchief, still a major Madras export in the 21st century, but now the major market is West Africa.

As a gift for losing America to rebels at Yorktown, Cornwallis was made Governor General of India. He launched the third Mysore war with Tipu, holding his sons as hostages.

The US consulate building in Madras, at Gemini, was inspired by Chettinad architecture, which had a murram in center. Earlier the Consulate functioned from what is now Dare House in Parry's corner, he said. Benjamin Joy was the first American consul in Calcutta, but he tried to establish a trading post.

The Americans mostly left political affairs to Britain until India became a republic. In 1950 the Indo-American association was formed. A sister city link was established with Denver, but nothing materialized besides politicians from each city touring the other.

Christian Missionaries and Medicine

John Scudder and Myron Winslow, American allopathic doctors, came to serve as missionaries in Sri Lanka. Ida Scudder his granddaughter established Christian medical college, Vellore. Winslow collaborated with Arumuga Navalar to produce first  Tamil to English dictionary with 68,000s word in 1862.
Scudder Winslow and Green

The remarkable Samuel Fisk Green, from Worcester Massachusetts, translated medical books into Tamil and taught Jaffna Tamil boys who became better doctors than English-taught Colombo boys. There is a hospital in Jaffna named after him. None of the political parties in Tamilnadu which wear Tamil linguistic pride on their sleeves has continued Green's efforts. Allopathic medicine continues to be taught entirely in English in TN.

In 1883. Col Henry Olcott, Civil  War veteran and Helena Blavatsky , a Russian countess, formed the Theosophical society. Blavatsky dreamed of a river bank, could not find such a river in Bombay, then spotted the Adyar river in Madras and decided it was perfect for the society.

Olcott built finest Indology library with twenty thousand palm leaves and two lakh books. Olcott, an ardent student of Buddhism in South east Asia, revived Buddhism in Sri Lanka which was almost dead. Coupled with Green's work in Jaffna, they created the civil strife in Sri Lanka, opined Muthiah.

Cotton and Ice

Tirunelveli was the major cotton growing district in Madras Presidency. In 1830 Madras government brought Bernard Metcalfe from USA and introduced cotton gins. Gins were a failure because no laborer was willing to work with machines , they preferred their hands. Thomas James Finnie came with planters to plant American cotton but realised that only Indian cotton plants grew well here. Robert White developed an Indian cotton in Coimbatore. The American civil war, cut off cotton supplies from the South - the Confederacy - and India filled the supply in this period.

Ice ships from Walden pond, packed in felt and sawdust, 80% were exported to Madras Bombay and Calcutta. Thoreau has written about it. Icebergs from Newfoundland were chopped up for export, when Massachusetts was too warm for ice. The Ice trade went on for a hundred years, 150 tons each year for three metros. Ice House, now the Vivekananda Illam in Triplicane, was the only building with an American flag in the city.

Ice ponds in Massachussets

US postmaster general Wannamaker donated of forty thousands dollars to construct the YMCA building in Madras. Harry Crowe Buck of Springfield, MA introduced physical education, volleyball and basketball to Madras. India's Olympic program owes everything to Harry Crowe Buck.

YMCA, Harry Buck - speaker Muthiah

The Jaffna American missionaries built American College in Madurai. In beating the heat of Madurai in the summer, the found Ooty was too snooty. So they established Kodaikanal.

In 1907 Henry Phipps started Pasteur institute in Connoor by donating one lakh dollars to Lord Curzon. At this time there was only one Pasteur institute in North India and supplies of vaccines and serums to south were sparse. Their role in the eradication of  rabies was invaluable.

In 1911 Chandler added to and compiled a Tamil dictionary, based on Winslow dictionary. He produced Tamil Lexicon now 82,000 words. Later Vaiyapuri Pillai took it up.

In 1915 WCC, the Women's christian college was founded, with funds from Rockefeller. The Founding records are in Mt Holyoke College in the USA on which it was based.

Scudder (a descendant of Ira Scudder who set up CMC Vellore) and Rottschaeffer, set up the tuberculosis sanatorium in Madanapalle. Dr Janeway set up pediatric ward in Madras.

Films and Factories

Most famous is Ellis Dungan, an American film director, who lived in Madras for fifteen years and directed several Tamil movies. He introduced camera and lighting techniques. Two of his movies starred with M.S.Subbulakshmi - Meera and Sakuntalai. He also directed Mandirikumari starring MGR, for which the script was written by M Karunanidhi, both of whom went on to become Chief Minsiters of Tamilnadu.

Ellis Dungan and MS Subbulakshmi

The Ford company built a plant in Bombay in 1916 but shut it down in the 1950s. Ford trucks were manufactured in Madras, in a collaboration with  Amalgamations, but this was a failure. But Ford came back in 1996 set up a plant to make cars on GST Road. They scouted several locations, but the clinching  factor was dinner in the Madras club!

Earliest freedom fighters - against British rule - including Sikhs granted asylum in USA. Franklin Roosevelt urged Churchill to grant India independence.

The American Consul was in attendance at the lecture.

Street Lighting –
